Chemical composition of growth in nestling blackbirds and thrushes.

چکیده
I . The bodies of twenty-three nestling blackbirds and twenty-one nestling thrushes were analysed at different ages for water, fat, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and magnesium. These birds grow from a weight of 5 g at hatching to 70 and 5 0 g respectively when they leave the nest 12-13 d later. 2. The concentration of N in the bodies doubled, while Ca increased seven to eight times during this period, so that the total amount of Ca in the body increased by about 100 times. 3. The femurs of the newly hatched birds were very immature and contained little Ca or collagen but in the fledgelings the femurs were as well calcified as those of 17-d-old chicks. 4. The gastro-intestinal tracts of the birds contained large amounts of Ca. Their food consists of caterpillars, adult insects and earthworms, none of which have much Ca in their tissues but their gut contents may contain much Ca. It is suggested that it is the gut contents of these invertebrates that provide nestling birds with Ca.

Blackbirds and song thrushes constitute a key reservoir of Borrelia garinii, the causative agent of borreliosis in Central Europe.
Blackbirds (Turdus merula) and song thrushes (Turdus philomelos) were found to carry 95% of all spirochete-infected tick larvae among 40 bird species captured in Central Europe. More than 90% of the infections were typed as Borrelia garinii and Borrelia valaisiana. We conclude that thrushes are key players in the maintenance of these spirochete species in this region of Central Europe.

The ontogeny of shivering thermogenesis was investigated in the altricial red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus). Two indices of heat production the rate of oxygen consumption (V(dot)O2) of the bird and the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the pectoralis (PECT) and gastrocnemius (GAST) muscles were measured simultaneously in adult and nestling red-winged blackbirds as they we...
متن کاملDifferential role of passerine birds in distribution of Borrelia spirochetes, based on data from ticks collected from birds during the postbreeding migration period in Central Europe.
Borrelia spirochetes in bird-feeding ticks were studied in the Czech Republic. During the postbreeding period (July to September 2005), 1,080 passerine birds infested by 2,240 Ixodes ricinus subadult ticks were examined. Borrelia garinii was detected in 22.2% of the ticks, Borrelia valaisiana was detected in 12.8% of the ticks, Borrelia afzelii was detected in 1.6% of the ticks, and Borrelia bu...
متن کاملThe effects of different concentrations of selenium and zinc nanoparticles on growth performance, survival and chemical composition of Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of selenium and zinc nanoparticles on growth performance, survival and chemical composition of Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). For this purpose, shrimp with an average weight of 5.1±0.2 g were distributed in 12 fiberglass tanks with 25 shrimp density and were fed for 56 days with different concentrations of sele...
متن کاملCampylobacter jejuni sequence types show remarkable spatial and temporal stability in Blackbirds
BACKGROUND The zoonotic bacterium Campylobacter jejuni has a broad host range but is especially associated with birds, both domestic and wild. Earlier studies have indicated thrushes of the genus Turdus in Europe to be frequently colonized with C. jejuni, and predominately with host-associated specific genotypes. The European Blackbird Turdus merula has a large distribution in Europe, including...
